Sometimes a world championship story doesn’t begin at the gaming table, but in your own backyard. For us, that’s exactly how it started – and in the end we could barely believe the result: We are SAGA World Champions 2026!

Seven Years, Four World Cups

The SAGA World Cup has become a fixture in our community. After its debut in England in 2019, it moved to Germany in 2023, Sweden in 2025 – tradition has it that the hosting rights pass to the reigning champion, or to the runner-up if the host nation itself wins the title. And in 2026, the tournament returned to England, this time near Manchester.

Our team this year: Tim, Tristan, Liam – ably supported by his father Ralf – and myself. A real mix in terms of age and experience, but the chemistry was right from the very start.

Preparation in the Garden

To get in the mood, we met up in my garden in Mehrhoog – on one of the hottest days of the year, of all times. Between plenty of cold drinks, we discussed tactics, talked through possible scenarios, and played test games. In hindsight, that turned out to be worth its weight in gold for how we played throughout the tournament.

A Family Holiday with a Tournament Highlight

Since the World Cup was taking place near Manchester, my family and I built our annual holiday around it. After a stop in London, we headed on to a longer stay in the Peak District – in a beautiful cottage, surrounded by picturesque hills we spent a lot of time hiking through. Highly recommended, not least because the Peak District is only about a 40-minute drive from Stockport, where the tournament itself was hosted at the Element Games venue.

The whole event was organised and run by Team England – and they deserve enormous credit for it. From the venue to the schedule to the atmosphere, everything was wonderfully organised, ran smoothly, and felt friendly through and through.Unfortunately, Team England I couldn’t take part, since including them would have brought the field to 17 teams. So, with a touch of wistfulness but true gentlemanly spirit, they stepped back from the active tournament.

The Tournament: 16 Teams, 64 Players, Plenty of Tension

16 teams of four players each took part, with every team playing five games – adding up to an impressive 64 players battling it out over two days.

In our very first game we faced Team England II (Mercian Marauders) head-on: I played my Pagan Rus against Picts. My teammates picked equally varied factions – Tristan fielded the English in the Age of Knights, Liam played the Diadochi in the Age of Antiquity, and Tim played the Mongols. From there we went on to play Austria (Team Austria – Huns) and France (Guillo Team – Anglo-Saxons), before the second day of the tournament kicked off with a game against Hungary (Team Hungary – Scots) and closed out against Poland (Romans – Age of Invasions)

.I won’t go into detail on every single game here – but one thing is clear: every single match was fair and played in a real spirit of good sportsmanship.

That was true for us as much as for every opponent we faced.Beyond the “sporting” challenge itself, one of the biggest reasons I keep coming back – and I know many others feel the same – is getting to meet so many like-minded people and friends from countries all over, and share a fantastic time together.

As Close as It Gets

This was already my fourth World Cup, and one thing keeps standing out more and more: the gap between teams keeps shrinking every year. Clear-cut results became rarer, and many games were genuinely decided on the very last dice roll – which only added to the tension right up to the end.

In the end, we came out on top with a narrow but well-earned margin of 16 tournament points ahead of France. What a weekend.

Thank You, Team – and a Look Ahead

A huge thank you to my team for this incredible achievement. If we’re given the right to host the next World Cup in Germany in 2028, I really hope we’ll all line up together again – and that the whole German-speaking SAGA community comes together to put on a fantastic event. I’ve already had offers of help and plenty of inspiration from several people, which fills me with confidence already

.Our family holiday was rounded off with two relaxed days in Oxford before we headed back home to Germany.

After the World Cup Comes the Grand Melee

No sooner is the World Cup over than the next highlight is already just around the corner: at the end of September, the Grand Melee takes place right in our village of Mehrhoog – also a team tournament, but played in two-player teams this time. Das Grundszenario basiert auf “Alte Fehde” aus dem Buch der Schlachten und wurde dann federführend von El Cid und uns weiterentwickelt.

Die Feuertaufe

Hierbei handelt es sich um ein Szenario, dass ursprünglich von Rodge aus der englischsprachigen SAGA Community stammt. Vielen Dank auch an El Cid für seine Adaption.

Heiliger Boden

Bei diesem Szenario handelt es sich um einen Klassiker, der schon 2011 in der ersten Version von SAGA Teil des Regelbuches war.

 Die Wolfsklamm

Das Szenario wurde von J Messenger für das UK Grand Melee geschrieben.

Es ist ein forderndes Szenario, welches ein gutes Timing und Stellungsspiel erfordert. Ich bin mir sicher, dass es auch bei uns Einzug in die gängigen Turnier-Szenarios finden wird.

Durchbrecht den Schildwall! V4:

Die einzige Veränderung in der V4 ist, dass nun Geländestücke lediglich außerhalb von SK (vormals K) um die Missisionszielmarker aufgestellt werden können. Erfahrungen haben gezeigt, dass es ansonsten fast unmöglich ist Geländestücke sinnvoll zu platzieren.

Wir haben eine optionale Regel hinzugeführt. Hierbei bekommt jeder Spieler zum Ende des eigenen Spielzugs ab dem zweiten Spielzug für jeden eigenen Missionszielmarker, der sich in der eigenen Aufstellungszone befindet,  jeweils MINUS 2  Vernichtungspunkte. Es ist irrelevant, ob der Missionszielmarker kontrolliert wird oder nicht.

Wir haben das Szenario mehrfach getestet und stellten hierbei fest, dass viele Spieler insbesondere  mit kavalleriestarken Armeen die eigenen Missionszielmarker einfach ignorieren und schlichtweg versuchen wie bei dem Szenario “Kampf der Kriegsherren” die gegnerische Armee zu vernichten. Dies ist unserer Meinung klar gegen die Idee des Szenarios, von zwei um die Oberhand streitender Schildwälle.

Schnappt die Beute!: Hier haben wir ein “neues” SAGA Szenario für euch. Es ist auch Teil des 2022 Grand Melee Szenario Pools.

Meiner Meinung nach ein taktisch sehr anspruchsvolles Szenario, da man gleichzeitig das eigene Haus verteidigen und das gegnerische angreifen muss. Hierbei das richtige Balancing und Timing zu finden ist für den Erfolg entscheidend.

Kampf Der Kriegsherren – Varianten

Ich spiele auf dem diesjährigen französischen Grand Melee mit meinen Wikingerinnen mit. Und da mein Französisch gelinde gesagt eher mäßig ist, habe ich zu spielenden Szenarios durch den Google-Übersetzer gejagt. Gespielt werden ausschließlich Varianten vom Szenario „Kampf der Kriegsherren“ aus dem SAGA-Regelbuch. Beim Lesen kam mir die Idee, dass ich die Szenarios dann doch auch gleich für euch optisch ein wenig aufbereite und zum Download bereitstelle. Kampf der Kriegsherren – Varianten

SAGA Szenario: Der Hort des Jarl Wenningson Der Dorfälteste erzählt seine Mähr schon seit seiner Kindheit, an die er sich ansonsten schon kaum noch erinnert. In den Sümpfen so faselt er, hat einstmals Jarl Wenningson seinen Hort auf der Flucht vor seinen Feinden rasch verstecken müssen. Leider wurde er von ihnen kurz darauf gestellt, umzingelt und wenig ehrenhaft niedergemacht. Viele schon zogen seit dem aus ,um in den Grausümpfen den Hort zu bergen. As mentioned before, this is our 10th Grand Melee, and as always, we want to make it something special for all of you.

A team tournament offers a lot of opportunities in this regard. On the one hand, we gained valuable experience organizing the SAGA Team World Cup 2023, and on the other hand, to the best of our knowledge, there has not yet been a comparable SAGA tournament of this size in Germany.

Another great advantage is that we can include a wide variety of scenarios. Even more unusual setups, such as river scenarios, can be featured, as we have enough rivers and bridges available for one player from each team to play on their own dedicated table.

Facts:

• 2-Player Team Tournament
• Maximum of 22 teams
• Player 1 selects a faction from Age of Vikings or Invasions. Player 2 selects a faction from Age of Crusades or Age of Chivalry. Games are always played against players from another team using the corresponding Ages.
• 6 points per army (half-points are allowed).
• Units that cost half a point (e.g. a Cannon) and special units such as Berserkers, Curaidh, etc. must always be fielded at their full listed cost.
• One Mercenary selection per army.
• No Legendary Heroes or Legendary Units.
• No factions from Old Friends, New Enemies.
• Relics and Artefacts are not permitted.
• Skraelings may be used and are considered part of the Age of Vikings.

Pairings – Scenario Pool – First Player

Team pairings will be determined using the Swiss system, with each team playing on two adjacent tables.

For each round pairing, there will be a scenario pool consisting of three different scenarios.

The lower-ranked team chooses the first scenario for one of the matchups. The higher-ranked team then selects one of the two remaining scenarios for the second matchup, leaving the final scenario for the remaining players.

The team that did not choose a particular scenario determines the first player for that game, or may instead offer that right to the opposing team in exchange for a bid of 1–6 Victory Points.

Best Painted Armies

As in previous years, we will once again award the most beautifully painted armies.

Berserker of the Year

The team that eliminates the highest number of opposing Warlords over the course of the tournament will win this award.

We are already really looking forward to another Grand Melee with you.

For the 10th anniversary of the German Grand Melee, we have come up with something special for you.

We will be hosting a two-player team tournament. We have space for 22 teams.

Player 1 chooses a faction from either the Age of Vikings or Invasions. Player 2 chooses a faction from either the Age of Crusades or KChivalry. Across five rounds, your team will face a different opponent each time, with matches always played within their respective eras (Vikings/Invasions play against Vikings/Invasions, etc.).

In addition, each round will feature a scenario pool, from which teams will alternately assign a scenario to each game.
