Clash of Rhyfles

Clash of Rhyfles is the new, 144 page hardcover rule book for skirmish gaming on Alwyd, the whimsical world of the Quar beset by the grim horrors of war. Under the shadow of the Long War small patrols of brave young bucks and grizzled veterans fight the critical little conflicts that greatly impact the larger battles in ways few ever notice.

Clash of Rhyfles expands on the rules from A Rhyfler’s Pocket-Book, the quick-start rules found in our first starter. Clarifying and providing examples of key concepts, this book makes joining The Long War even easier for new players. Additionally this book contains new Special Abilities for your rhyflers and Equipment Traits for their weapons. From daring Yawdryls using the new Scout Special Ability to rules for Gwynt Scattergunners, players will find multiple new options for their forces.

Players gather a Patrol of rhyflers from their chosen Faction, selecting the profiles they feel will best help them seize the day, including the following new unit types.

Cavalry returns to Alwyd with new profiles better representing their power in these small
engagements. Cadier and Autopeds charge across the battlefield, attacking on the move. But their riders must be cautious!! One lucky shot and they may find themselves stuck on the ground, their mounts taken from under them, and have to continue the fight on foot.

Tractors and vehicles join the fray, bringing mobility and armored might to all Factions.
Transports race your rhyflers across the battlefield while Tractors provide vital firepower and durability to your Patrol.

Clash of Rhyfles introduces the full might of Heavy Weapons Teams to the skirmish setting. These devastating weapons can control major portions of the battlefield and require great skill and determination to remove, but must still rely on the humble rhyfler to protect their flanks.

New lore and uniform plates for seven of the main Factions on Alwyd make up the setting
chapter of the book, with all the information needed to choose the right group for you. The upstart Crusaders and elite veterans of Toulmore are joined by the Western Arnyarans in the fight against the Royalist forces of Coftyr, Fidwog, Gwynt, and Creevin.

And finally the Missions chapter presents players with 10 scenarios to get their battles started right away. Begin with the classic Meeting Engagement and work your way up to the challenges of the Trench Raid and Armoured Assault. Complete with Mission Special Rules and optional Special Events so no two battles will ever be the same.

William d’Aubigny, Lord of Belvoir

Amidst the tumultuous reign of King John, William d’Aubigny emerged as a man of conviction and strategic brilliance. Initially hesitant to take sides in the conflict, he witnessed the rebels’ triumphant capture of London in 1215 and was compelled to join their cause.

As a staunch defender of the barons’ rights, he bravely held Rochester Castle, a formidable fortress that became a beacon of resistance. Yet, King John’s relentless pursuit of power and capture of Rochester led to d’Aubigny’s imprisonment and a near-death sentence.

Despite these harrowing experiences, his resolve remained unshaken. With the ascent of Henry III, d’Aubigny swiftly transitioned from rebel to loyal subject, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the stability of the realm.
At the Second Battle of Lincoln, he played a pivotal role in securing victory, cementing his reputation as a courageous and adaptable leader.

Salah al-Din, Sultan of Egypt

Most famous for his many victories over Outremer, Salah al-Din (commonly known as Saladin) was the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty. He was the first sultan of both Egypt and Syria.
Rising to prominence in the second crusade, he was an important figure of the Third Crusade, spearheading the Muslim military effort against the Crusader states in the Levant. While he had undoubted experience as a military leader Salah al-Din’s greatest gift was as a strategist.

Balian Of Ibelin

Balian of Ibelin (1143–1193), also known as Barisan the Younger, was a crusader noble of the Kingdom of Jerusalem in the 12th century. He was Lord of Ibelin from 1170 to 1193.
As the leader of the defence of the city during the siege of Jerusalem in 1187, he surrendered Jerusalem to Saladin on 2 October 1187

Foot Serjeant with Halberd

William of Cassingham, nicknamed Willikin of the Weald by chroniclers, was a country squire who took up arms to oppose the French invasion. Reportedly, his army of guerrillas numbered in the thousands, and wreaked havoc on the enemy in the Kentish Weald. His travels to John’s base of operations in Nottingham castle may have permanently associated bow-wielding outlaws with the area, giving rise to the legend of Robin Hood in later centuries.

At the end of the war, due to his loyalty to the crown, William was granted a handsome pension and made Warden of the Weald and Sergeant of the Peace by King Henry, a post he held until his death.

Prince Louis of France

In 1215, the English barons rebelled against the unpopular King John in the First Barons’ War. The Barons reasoned that as Louis’ wife, Blanche of Castileas, was a descendant of Henry II of England, they would offer the throne to Louis.
Prince Louis of France landed unopposed on the Isle of Thanet on 21 May 1216. There was little resistance when the prince entered London at the head of his army, where he was proclaimed King Louis I of England at Old St. Paul’s Cathedral with much pomp and celebration in the presence of all of London.

However, with the death of John in October 1216, the barons changed their allegiance to John’s son, the nine-year-old Henry (Henry III)

Aymeric, Master of the Knights Templar

Aymeric de Saint Maur was the Master of the Knights Templar in England, one of the most powerful men in Britain. He worked with Archbishop Stephen Langton to produce the original draft of the Magna Carta and was a witness in Runnymede when it was sealed in 1215

Robert Fitzwalter

The leader of the baronial opposition against King John was Robert fitzWalter or to give him his full titles, Marshal of the Army of God and Holy Church, Baron of Little Dunmow, Constable of Baynard’s Castle, Castellain and Chief Banneret of the City of London and member of the Security Council of the Barons as enshrined in Magna Carta.

According to Robert, the reason for his revolt had been the king’s attempt to seduce his eldest daughter Matilda, however, his account of his grievances varied. It is believed these stories of Matilda recorded by monastic chroniclers and added to by several other barons making similar accusations developed into the legend of Robin Hood with Matilda morphing into the maid Marion.

A war that began over Magna Carta quickly turned into a dynastic war for the throne of England. The rebel barons, faced with a powerful king, turned to Louis, son and heir apparent of King Philip II of France and grandson-in-law of King Henry II of England for help. Many of the rebel Barons welcomed the invitation extended to Louis to invade as Robert fitzWalter proved to be tactically inept during their initial skirmishes.
