Fitted with a single\u00a0mast\u00a0and a\u00a0square-rigged\u00a0single sail and measuring\u00a015 to 25 meters (49 to 82\u00a0ft) in length with a\u00a0beam\u00a0of 5 to 8 meters (16 to 26\u00a0ft) they were widely used during the 12th Century as trading vessels.<\/p>\n

One such Cog outfitted for war provided by the Earl of Pembroke grappled the French flagship during the Battle of Sandwich (24th August 1217). The resultant capture\u00a0of the Capetian French commander’s Admiral Eustace the Monk and Robert I, the younger son of the emperor\u00a0Peter II of Courtenay,\u00a0defeated the French armada and ended Prince Louis attempt to conquer England.<\/p>\n
