Often luxurious and maintained by Rome’s elite, villas were categorised by Pliny the Elder as either the\u00a0villa urbana<\/em>\u00a0or the\u00a0villa rustica<\/em>. The later stood in splendid isolation surrounded by lush rolling fields, the former packed into a bustling cityscape.<\/p>\n
