The hopelessly outnumbered men fought till they expended their last bullet then retreated as Marshal Ney, heavily supported by artillery, led a furious assault with the 13th Legere and a company of engineers. The French were finally able to take the position, but ultimately it was too late in the day.

The defence of the farm denied Napoleon this valuable strategic position and allowed Blücher and the Prussian army time to arrive and lend vital assistance to Wellington.

PAPELOTTE FARM (28MM)

Papelotte Farm formed part of the advanced defensive positions toward the centre-left flank of the Duke of Wellington’s army at Waterloo on the 18th of June 1815.

As the battle raged men of the King’s Dutch Brigade defended until their ammunition ran out. Although the French would finally take the position late in the day, within a few hours it was back in Prussian hands.

Papelotte Farm although damaged and partially burnt down still stands today and is now the home of the Poney club de la Papelotte.

Hougoumont

Chateau Goumont, better known as Ch√¢teau d‚ÄôHougoumont, is the location of perhaps the single most significant action to happen during the Battle of Waterloo, 18th June 1815.

An attack by Mar√©chal de Camp Baron Soye’s 1st Brigade of the 6th Division on the North gate lead to a breakthrough by Sous-Lieutenant Legros, wielding an axe. In the ensuing desperate fight, Legros and soldiers of the 1st Legere were all trapped and killed in desperate hand-to-hand fighting, the lone survivor being a young drummer boy.
