| From the crumbling fire traps of the Subura to the less dangerous examples around the cattle market, the insulae were Rome’s apartments and high-rise complexes. With some example standing in excess of five storeys and boasting taverns, bakers and less salubrious places to spend a denarius, the insulae were Rome’s answer to affordable housing.
