Amidst the tumultuous reign of King John, William d’Aubigny emerged as a man of conviction and strategic brilliance. Initially hesitant to take sides in the conflict, he witnessed the rebels‘ triumphant capture of London in 1215 and was compelled to join their cause.

As a staunch defender of the barons‘ rights, he bravely held Rochester Castle, a formidable fortress that became a beacon of resistance. Yet, King John’s relentless pursuit of power and capture of Rochester led to d’Aubigny’s imprisonment and a near-death sentence.

Despite these harrowing experiences, his resolve remained unshaken. With the ascent of Henry III, d’Aubigny swiftly transitioned from rebel to loyal subject, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the stability of the realm.
At the Second Battle of Lincoln, he played a pivotal role in securing victory, cementing his reputation as a courageous and adaptable leader.
