Hengest: The Legendary Leader of the Anglo-Saxon Settlement in Britain
Hengest is one of the most prominent figures in early Anglo-Saxon history, traditionally regarded as the leader of the first Germanic settlers who arrived in Britain in the 5th century. Alongside his brother Horsa, Hengest is credited with establishing the foundations of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, particularly in Kent. Here’s what we know about him:
Historical Context
- Hengest and Horsa are first mentioned in Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People (731 AD) as leaders of the Jutes, Angles, and Saxons who were invited by the British king Vortigern to help defend against Pictish and Scottish raids.
- According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (9th century), Hengest and Horsa landed in Ebbsfleet, Kent, in 449 AD. They initially served as mercenaries but later rebelled against Vortigern, leading to the establishment of Germanic rule in parts of Britain.
Stronghold Terrain prints these miniatures as an official licensee of Medbury Miniatures.
